Pilates is one of the most accessible ways to strengthen your core, improve your flexibility and develop your posture. But what does it involve?

Core Balance gives you the rundown.

The Ins and Outs

Pilates isn't your average form of exercise.

Rather than targeting specific muscle groups, like CrossFit or yoga, each low-impact movement works your deep postural muscles, which helps to strengthen your entire core from the inside out. It essentially gives you a full body workout, only with less pain and sweat.

There's also an emphasis on keeping your body aligned throughout each movement, which is why it's such an effective way to develop your posture and mobility.

Where do I start?

All you need is a mat and some motivation.

Our 12mm Foam Pilates Mat is a top choice. It's thicker than a yoga mat to reduce the impact on your joints whilst providing the stability you need to practise different movements.

It also includes a free e-Book which contains some fantastic step-by-step exercises.

What are the benefits?

Because Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, it puts less strain on your joints and muscles, meaning it builds and strengthens them in a less intense and more controlled way.

It's for this reason that Pilates is often used by physiotherapists when treating people recovering from muscle injuries or suffering from chronic neck or back pain.

By easing pressure on the hips and other joints, it can also be used to ease arthritis.

Who can do it?

Anyone. Unlike yoga, you don't have to be blessed with amazing flexibility.

Some movements are more intense than others, but the beauty of Pilates is that you can easily create a workout that caters for your wants, needs and limits.

If you suffer from an underlying condition, such as high blood pressure or osteoporosis, you should always consult your doctor before taking up a new exercise routine.
